Throwing star are a martial arts weapon for self defense and martial arts training whether for competitions or attack prevention.
However, originally the more commonly seen four sided shuriken was a tool used by carpenter and workers to pull out nails. Some of these carpenters were ninja, but could not afford to buy weapons from a weapon-smith. A strange application of shuriken is throwing them skillfully so as to reflect sunlight, as a distraction of light could make valuable seconds count. Shuriken could be used on the battlefield in this capacity and some were designed to bounce away after they hit to make the enemy believe that they were struck by an invisible swordsman.
Unlike a throwing knife, the throwing star is designed to harm the target regardless of which end it lands on. Throwing stars usually come with 3 points and up to 8 points and is more of disabling or distraction weapon.They are very sharp and made of stainless steel or other very hard metallic material. They are usually hidden in pouches and thrown at victims. Some throwing stars or shurikens are covered with poison, so that a quick kill can be accomplished. A more common poison was regular rust which in the ninja's time would mean certain death by even a scratch. If not poisoned and the shuriken is used as a weapon with the intent of causing the most possible damage, the throat and face should be the prime targets. The shuriken (throwing star) was a perfect weapon for its time. It could be easily hidden and unlike the throwing knife, the throwing star was designed to injure the target regardless of the edge that struck. The Japanese art of Ninjitsu was most known for their use of the throwing star (shuriken). They were masters of concealment and deception, so a hidden weapon and a quick release killing tool such as the throwing star was ideal. Many years of practice is required to master the Shuriken throwing star.
Training with throwing stars should be only done with a qualified instructor as they are a dangerous weapon and caution is advised.
