Bo staffs are a martial arts weapon for self defense and martial arts training whether for competitions or attack prevention.

bo-stick

A bo is a long stick usually made out of wood or bamboo. A full-size bo is also sometimes called rokushakubo. Other types of bo range from heavy to light, from rigid to highly flexible, and from simply a piece of wood picked up off the side of the road to ornately decorated works of art. Originally simply a long stick that was originally used to carry buckets of water and food-it was known as ten bin. The bo is round smooth and solid. A standard bo is a tabering stick of wood 1 1/4 in. the middle and 3/4 in.at each end. The tapering gives the bo both flexibility and strength as well as making the center easy to find. Kobudo places great emphasis on the use of the bo, an implement said to be derived from the tenbib, which was a wooden staff that was slung across the shoulders in order to transport buckets of water on each end.

Other staff-type weapons include the threefoot wooden stick, four-foot wooden stick, Iron staff and three-sectioned staff. The most popular type of bo is the rokushaku, which measures six feet in length and 1 1/4 inches thick at the center, tapering down to 3/4 inch at the ends. Other types of bo range in length from four to nine feet, and can be round, four-sided, sixsided, or eight-sided. There are several different styles and sizes of Bo Staffs. They come in aluminum, toothpick, canadian ash, crackle and acrylic styles. Some are lightweight, but very strong.

The basic premise of the bo is to increase the force delivered in a strike through leverage. The bo can also be used to thrust, basically letting you punch from long distance. It can also be used for joint-locks, which are used to subdue an enemy without killing them. The bo is a weapon mainly used for self-defence, and can be used to execute several blocks and parries as well. Martial arts techniques, such as kicks and blocks, are also often combined with the weapon techniques when practicing this martial art.

There are stick fighting techniques native to just about every country on every continent. The word "bo" is merely the Japanese word for the weapon. The Bo Staff can be used to strike, block and trap your opponent. This is probably one of the first weapons that mankind used to defend or hunt.

Training with bo staffs should be only done with a qualified instructor as they are a dangerous weapon and caution is advised.
