Batons are a martial arts weapon for self defense and martial arts training whether for competitions or attack prevention.

baton

Baton weapons date back to prehistoric times and cavemen. Stick weapons were the very first weapons. We have all seen scenes in art or in movies with the proverbial caveman holding a drumstick shaped club. Clubs were larger than just a mere stick, and the force of their blow was very dependent upon the thickness and type of wood used.

A baton, when employed by a properly trained individual can be either an impact weapon or a defensive shield. When held one way, it can be used to deflect blows from an attacker and visa versa. When employed as a lever it can be used as a pain compliance tool. As simple as the baton is in appearance, it can be a formidable opponent when used properly and as an impact tool, they can also be employed to break windows, break the safety glass surrounding fire extinguisher enclosures, or lever open doors to gain entry to most vehicles or structures.

There are several variations, but most common are the telescopic or expandable straight baton and the side-handle baton. A baton or truncheon, nightstick or billy-club is essentially a stick of just less than arms-length, usually made of wood, plastic, or metal, and carried by law enforcement, correctional, riot control, and security personnel for non-lethal self-defense or combat situations. A baton can be used to strike, jab and block and to aid armlocks. There are also straight, fixed batons, usually made of wood or a polymer material.

Some batons come with mace sprays inside and if you are not a member of law enforcement, we ask that you research the proper use of the baton so that you do not hurt either yourself through improper usage or an innocent bystander.

At the end of the 20th century, a popular type of telescopic straight baton or friction lock baton was made of steel tubing which collapsed together for carrying, then slid apart to expand as a weapon. A small metal knob on the end added weight when the baton was used as a bludgeon.

Training with baton sticks should be only done with a qualified instructor as they are a dangerous weapon and caution is advised.
