master with combat proficiency in mind
Author: sensei
WING CHUN instructor extraordinaire, Sifu Wong Shun Leung, conducted seminars and supervised training sessions in Melbourne, Geelong and Sydney during his recent, triumphant return to Australia. Hong Kong-based Wong Sifu proved to be as friendly and accessible as on previous visits to this country, generously giving of his knowledge and expertise in the Wing Chun system, as he teaches it.
A veteran of countless challenge matches in the late 1950s and early '60s, Sifu Wong discussed Wing Chun with combat proficiency in mind, stripping away all the mystique and nonsense that tends to be associated with other interpretations of this system.
The real purpose of his seminars was not to teach the system as such, but to clarify the concepts and the application of knowledge contained within the three basic training patterns, with an emphasis on the detailed discussion of the system, accompanied by physical examples, diagrams, and a generous sprinkling of anecdotes concerning Wong Sifu's martial history and that of his contemporaries.
Many of these were humorous accounts of his past 'contests', and his recollections of the late Grandmaster of Wing Chun, Yip Man, and of Sifu Wong's famous junior classmate and student, Bruce Lee.
His style of seminar suited the audience just fine as, in all locations, the bulk of those present were long-time devotees of Wing Chun who were anxious to gain a greater insight into the subtleties of the skills with which they were already familiar. Sifu Wong also conducted small-group sessions on advanced Wing Chun skills, including the Biu Ii and Muk Yan long (' wooden dummy') forms, and also displayed his skills in cha cha - something he picked up from Bruce Lee in his younger days, in exchange for Wing Chun skills! Afficionados travelled from as far afield as Perth and Adelaide to attend the seminars, while others went both South and North to be present in both Victoria and New South Wales. Schools taking part included the Barry Lee Ving Tsun (Wing Chun) Academy, the Sydney Wing Chun Academy, the Australasian Wing Chun Pai, the Perth Wing Chun Academy and the host school, the Melbourne Chinese Martial Arts Club.
In Victoria, 'MCMAC' principal instructor and Wong Shun Leung student, David Peterson, translated proceedings, while in NSW, Wong Sifu was ably translated by Victor Leow of the 'AWCP'. Wong Sifu was reunited with many old acquaintances on this trip, including Sydney-based Wing Chun instructor, Derek Fung, whom WongSifuhadn't seen for close on 30 years.
For those who missed out this time around, the good news is that Wong Sifu hopes to return to our shores again in the not -too-distant future. In the meantime, anyone wishing to find out more about the 'Wong Shun Leung method' should get in touch with his NSW or Victorian representatives, Barry Lee or David Peterson, for details of Wong Sifu's next visit DownUnder.
