Started in 1993, the Ultimate Fighting Championship is an operation of professional mixed martial arts organization offering the premier series of MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) sports events.
The UFC organization follows a history and tradition of competitive MMA dating back through history to the Olympic Games in Athens. A Brazilian form of MMA known as Vale Tudo - anything goes - sparked local interest in the sport about 80 years ago.
All UFC fighters have had much previous fighting and sports experience and so are world or Olympic champions. Most train up to six - seven hours a day or more in preparation for an event. Many study martial arts as a lifelong striving and some are also college educated and many of these men are business owners. But it is the success, discipline and focus of the Ultimate Fighter that makes him different from just about any other competitor in or out of mixed martial arts.
Mixed martial arts is combat martial sport so competitors use forms of fighting that include jiu-jitsu, judo, karate, boxing, kickboxing, kung fu, wrestling and others to their strategic and tactical and dominating advantage in these supervised matchs. No single discipline reigns once in a real life adaptive situation. The New Ultimate Fighting Championship is committed to providing the highest quality live TV events available to entertain and engage viewers in a fascinating martial sport.
When the UFC organization brought this MMA competition to the United States the goal was to find “the Ultimate Fighter” with the idea to have a tournament of the best fighters in the various disciplines of all martial arts, including karate, jiu-jitsu, boxing, kickboxing, kung fu, grappling, wrestling, muay thai, shootfighting, sumo and other combat sports. The winner of the tournament would be titled the Ultimate Figting Champion.
In November of 1993, a planned event took place which would change the martial arts community - the Ultimate Fighting Championship.
This event featured eight martial artists of different styles and experience in a winner take all tournament. The event was billed as the first of its kind in North America with few rules (no biting or eye-gouging), and took place in The Octagon. Some of the remembered fighters are Ken Shamrock the first champion of UFC, Gracie Royce who was well known for ability to lock fighters in submissions.
The majority of fighters who competed where basically unknowns, with a variety of systems from Karate, Kung Fu to Shootfighting. The favorites to win the event was Ken Shamrock, a large built shootfighter who was famous in Japan. But, the man who stole the show, and also revealed to the world a new style of fighting was Royce Gracie, a lightweight fighter who represented Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, a groundfighting jujitsu style modified and perfected by the Gracie family in Brazil. No match came close to rounds of ten minutes and so the rounds were inconsequential. This event showed the world what the martial arts was about and triggered the explosion of mixed martial arts ground fighting and new events around the world and especially North America.
Royce Gracie, was now famous as being unstoppable after cruising through the first two events, would face his biggest challenge, Kimo, in one of the most famous matches in UFC history. Another match which has also gained fame was with the largest man to ever step inside the Octagon, Sumo Emmanuel, who measured 6'8" and weighed 668lbs.
After the quarter finals, Hackney badley injured his hand in his fight against Yarbrough and because of this was forced out, setting Felix Lee Mitchell to fight Ken Shamrock in the semis. But also after the first round, Gracie was forced to withdraw due to his injury and fatigue. Since Gracie actually came to the ring and then threw in the towel before the fight started, Howard got to the finals but Jennum went on to win.
Once the UFC brand was launched, MMA popularity surged in Brazil, followed by immense interest in Japan where these bouts became major events and response to the UFC brand of MMA is tremendous, resulting in a huge growing fan base that has grown exponentially through the years.
Competitors may only use commission approved 4-6 oz boxing gloves, designed to protect the hand but not large enough to hinder the striking or weight of the punch.
The Octagon ensures that all of the action stays safely contained in this protected fighting area, where in a boxing ring competitors can fall over or through the ropes.
Absolutely No head butting or kicking to the downed opponent
Absolutely No knees to the head of a downed opponent
Absolutely No downward point of the elbow strikes
Absolutely No strikes to the spine or the back of the head
